Indian Health Service Complaints

Monday morning a reporter and myself went to Fort Thompson to talk with tribe members about recent complaints and an investigation into IHS.  Some of the stories we heard were very powerful and talked about substandard health care for these people.  There was an obvious distaste toward this clinic from almost everyone we talked to in Fort Thompson.   Take a look at my colleagues  story and let me know what you think about the situation.  http://www.mitchellrepublic.com/event/article/id/46021/

My daughter-in-law is a member of the tribe in Sisseton – she has told me similar stories relating to her friends and family members. She actually was transported to North Dakota, while in labor, and then transported back to Sisseton to give birth… for reasons she doesn’t understand to this day. She recently told me that her grandfather, bitten by a recluse spider, was given only antibiotics and sent home from Sisseton IHS… which then resulted in him needing to be admitted to Sioux Falls for comprehensive treatment for the bite. He has lasting damage from this bite.

Stories like the ones in the article, and the ones my daughter-in-law tells me break my heart. No one should receive substandard care – no one should be turned away or limited as to what care they can receive. What is needed should be given – simple as that. That’s how it is supposed to work, when there is a sense of community responsibllity within the tribe, and the IHS that services them.
